Moon Alert

There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions. The moon is in Scorpio.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Oh my. Be still my beating heart. This is a seriously romantic, passionate day for you. This includes secret love affairs, casual, hidden flirtations and full-blown expressions of adoration. Some of you will receive a gift as a token of someone else's love or admiration for you.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

This is an exciting day for you because for some of you, a friend might become a lover. (Or at least, a hot flirtation.) Something about it will be a surprise — for sure. Others might meet a new friend who is delightful — nothing romantic — just warm and friendly.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

This is an interesting day because some of you will develop a crush on your boss or perhaps a romance will begin with someone in a position of authority? This person is probably related to your job. At a more modest level, people in authority will be kind to you.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

A sudden opportunity to travel might fall in your lap. How delightful! Others might get an unexpected chance to study or take a course or go to school. Meanwhile, romance with someone "different" will surprise many of you. (Not a boring day.)

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

You are a romantic sign and today you will be glad to know that this is a romantic day. In fact, it's a passionate day for some of you; and at the least, it's a flirtatious day for those who are timid but coquettish. A meaningful smile? A wink? A lingering look?

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Relations with friends and partners will be warm and tender today. Some of you might feel romantic and passionate. Others will be taken by surprise for some reason. Basically, people feel friendly to each other because romantic vibes are in the air.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is an excellent day for financial matters because unexpected opportunities (especially related to your job) might boost your income or give you a financial advantage in some way. Ask for a loan or mortgage. Expect to be pleasantly surprised.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Today the moon is in your sign dancing with fair Venus, which is a lovely, romantic connection. Flirtations, invitations and promising titillations will occur for many of you. These could be fleeting and minor, or it might stop you in your tracks and make your heart jump.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Stock the fridge because you might spontaneously entertain today. You might entertain a group, or you might entertain an individual. This person might be someone you feel attracted to? Certainly, this is the classic day for saucy flirtations and romantic get-togethers.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This is the kind of day where a friend might become a lover or a subtle flirtation might take place with a friend, or a member of a group, that neither of you acknowledges but you know it occurred. That "secret moment." (I'll never tell.) New people, new ideas and new places make this an interesting day!

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

People notice you today. This could be for a number of reasons, but definitely, one of these reasons might be because you're flirting with a boss? Or someone is attracted to you and others notice? This is also a favorable day to deal with real estate matters and shopping for home and family.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Flirtations and attractions to someone who is different are practically unavoidable today, unless you're living under a rock. ("Don't be coy, Roy.") Enjoy the company of others. Have some laughs. People are friendly today and surprise attractions will catch many off guard.

If Your Birthday Is Today

Singer, songwriter, actress Lady Gaga (1986) shares your birthday. You are independent, practical and often the center of attention. Your work gives you a sense of fulfillment. You're also generous. You have a wonderful, fun-loving year to look forward to. Let your hair down and enjoy yourself! However, don't lose sight of your goals.

On a night in which the Bulls defense was going to be challenged by the highest-scoring team in the league, they stepped up in a big way, downing the Pacers by 26.

Nam Y. Huh/AP

It was unique territory for Bulls coach Billy Donovan.

Just minutes after watching his team win by 26 points, there was little for him to pick at.

The defense had held the highest-scoring team in the league under 100 points for the first time this season in a 125-99 victory, the bench showed some life and the offense understood the importance of feeding the bigs as Nikola Vucevic and Andre Drummond were headaches for the Pacers all night.

In a month in which there have been few moments to breathe, Donovan was able to calmly take a deep breath Wednesday.

“I thought we really were connected defensively,” Donovan said. “We were on point when we needed to switch, were on point when we needed to stay. The only way to do that is through communication. I give our guys a lot of credit.”

The win kept the Bulls (35-38) 1½ games in front of the Hawks in the battle for the No. 9 seed and put them four games behind the eighth-seeded 76ers with nine to play.

All that mattered to guard Alex Caruso was the win.

“First time they’ve been under 100 this whole season?” Caruso asked surprisingly when the question about handcuffing the Pacers was tossed his way. “I didn’t know that.

“They seemed a little tired, but we played well. We didn’t have any of those lapses where we give up a slip-out layup or we forget to rotate or didn’t battle for the rebound. I just feel like for the most part, besides the way we started the third quarter, we were pretty consistent.”

And this performance was needed.

If the Bulls have showcased a strength this season, it has been that they don’t dwell on stains from previous games.

The loss to the Wizards on Monday was as greasy a stain as they’ve had in quite some time, but they flipped the page quickly.

In the second quarter, they outscored the Pacers 37-20 and looked seamless in doing so.

Vucevic led the way with nine points in the quarter, but he wasn’t alone in building a 23-point lead.

The Bulls outscored the Pacers 12-4 in the paint, won the battle of the benches 10-4 and outrebounded Indiana 9-6 in the second quarter, completely dismantling their division rivals on both ends.

The Pacers (41-33) tried to climb off the mat in the third quarter, using their transition game and three-point shooting to get within nine, but a hoop-and-harm on a Drummond put-in kicked the lead back to 12.

DeMar DeRozan and Coby White made sure to put hi-tops on throats, starting off the fourth on a mission and building the lead back up to 20.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak and earned the Bulls bragging rights in the season series, taking it 3-1.

Still, Donovan has been coaching against Rick Carlisle long enough to know that the Pacers are still a very dangerous team, especially if the Bulls somehow have to meet them in a play-in scenario.

“He has always come across to me as trying to use his personnel to the best of his ability,” Donovan said of Carlisle, whom he also coached against back in their Oklahoma City-Dallas days. “I think [Tyrese] Haliburton is such a unique player, and it’s to a certain extent what we tried to do with Lonzo [Ball] —get guys down the floor, let him throw it up, let him advance it.

“I think [Carlisle] has always done a great job of, ‘OK, here’s the personnel. How do we utilize it?’ ’’

BOSTON — Terrence Shannon Jr. is having the kind of NCAA Tournament moment kids fantasize about while shooting fadeaways on park blacktops across the country.

The Chicago native leads the Fighting Illini into their first Sweet 16 in almost two decades, averaging 23.3 points per game, second in the tournament behind Purdue’s Zach Edey.

If that isn’t enough proof that Shannon is standing center stage in the act that is Illinois’ NCAA run, it became obvious when, ahead of the third-seeded Illini’s matchup Thursday against second-seeded Iowa State, questions to the Cyclones were primarily focused on how to stop the 6-6 guard.

“His aggressiveness on the offensive side,” Iowa State guard Tamin Lipsey said Wednesday when asked what impresses him most about Shannon’s game. “His play-making ability. His speed. He uses his speed very well, and that’s something that we’re going to key in defensively trying to stop.”

The NCAA Tournament, by all accounts, is the biggest opportunity for collegiate athletes to gain exposure not only personally but for their university.

For as big of a tournament moment as Shannon is having, it hasn’t been deemed “madness” because, under the brightest lights, he has been silent. That came at the advice of his legal counsel, which he obtained after he was charged with rape in Douglas County, Kansas, in connection with an alleged assault that occurred while he was traveling to watch the Illini football team.

“No,” Illinois coach Brad Underwood said when asked if he sees any issue with his leading scorer — who is a representative of the team and university — not being available to the media. “That’s obviously a very serious situation. We’re very well aware of that. I think there’s communication he has to have with his legal counsel, and so on and so forth, to be aware of what’s in his best interest. We’re going to adhere to that.”

Adhere, they have.

Shannon broke the Big Ten Tournament’s single-game scoring record, dropping 40 points to help the Illini rally past Nebraska in the semifinals. However, he was not interviewed. The next night, he poured in a game-high 34, and again, it was Underwood and Shannon’s teammates who were left to speak for him.

In Illinois’ NCAA first-round win over Morehead State, Shannon’s 26 points broke the program’s 58-year-old single-season scoring record (668 points) held by Don Freeman. Still, there was no courtside interview or news conference to capture the moment.

Shannon’s attorney, Mark P. Sutter, issued a statement in December on his behalf declaring his innocence. After being suspended indefinitely by Illinois, Shannon was reinstated in January when U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Lawless found that the university had violated Shannon’s civil rights.

In total, Shannon missed six games for the Illini, during which the team went 4-2.

“Obviously, he’s a big piece for us,” forward Coleman Hawkins said. “The biggest thing we missed was his speed and his physicality on defense. I think we did a pretty good job of sustaining that shock and playing as a team.”

Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman, who is with the team, declined to answer questions from the Sun-Times.

Illinois boasts the No. 1 offense in the country, according to KenPom.com. The top defense belongs to Iowa State.

For the Illini to continue their attempt to one-up the 2005 tournament team, which lost to North Carolina 75-70 in the title game, they’re going to need more magic from Shannon.

In the last 14 games, Shannon has been held to fewer than 23 points just twice. He finished with 11 points in Illinois’ loss to Purdue on March 5, and 12 in their win over Iowa on Feb. 24.

In the postseason, he’s averaging 31.6 points, shooting 52.9% from the field and 41.7% from three.

“The [key] is to keep him from getting into the paint,” Iowa State guard Curtis Jones said. “He draws a lot of fouls in there, as well. He’s super fast in transition, makes a lot of plays in transition. So try to build a wall, to get back as fast as we can to stop those transition points.”

There’s no doubt that if Illinois beats Iowa State, it will be in large part because of Shannon. There was some speculation Wednesday that, given the stage and his dominance, Shannon would address the media.

That wasn’t the case.

The closer the Illini get to the Final Four, the brighter the lights will be on Shannon and the entire program, begging the question: Can an All-American and NCAA Tournament star evade the media entirely?

BOSTON — Illinois hasn’t made it to the Elite Eight since 2005.

In fact, everything Brad Underwood’s team attempts to do from here on out will be for the first time since Dee Brown and Deron Williams led the Fighting Illini to the national championship game nearly two decades ago. Illinois has made the NCAA Tournament in four straight years. Each year before, it lost in either the first or second round.

To continue making history, the Illini must get past No. 2-seeded Iowa State.

Three things to know about the opponent:

1. Iowa State has the most efficient defense in the country

Coach T.J. Otzelberger served two stints as an assistant at Iowa State before taking the head-coaching job in 2021. Since then, he has shaped the team’s identity around defense. There’s no better example of just how stifling the defense can be than its 57-53 win over No. 1-seeded Houston on Jan. 9.

“You feel so great in the locker room after all those sacrifices,” Otzelberger said. “All that hard work, all that unity, all that time, and you beat the No. 2-ranked team in the country. I truly believe that gave our guys a greater sense of purpose and confidence.”

2. Guard Tamin Lipsey’s production is on the upswing

Lipsey is the Cyclones’ second-leading scorer (12.5 points per game) behind guard Keshon Gilbert (13.7). But in the tournament, he has improved his offensive efficiency. He’s averaging 16 points and shooting 55% from the field and 55.6% from three.

Sustaining that production will be vital in the Cyclones’ efforts to keep up with the Illini’s high-powered offense.

3. Underwood is winless against Iowa State

In his career, Underwood has coached four games against Iowa State and lost all of them. His last meeting with the Cyclones was an 84-68 loss in his second year at -Illinois.

The Illini have an 11-3 series record against Iowa State, but the Cyclones have won the last two meetings.

Elvis Presley is a tough act to follow — or, as Carol Burnett once learned, to precede.

The television legend, 90, stopped by "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" on Tuesday and chatted about one of her previous times at the Ed Sullivan Theater: when she appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" on the same episode as Presley. This was when Presley was in the army, and "they did a whole big thing" with him, she explained.

Unfortunately for Burnett, she went on before Presley, so audience members were anxious to see the singer and had no interest in her.

"Nobody wanted to see me," she recalled. "'Elvis! Where the hell is Elvis? We want to see Elvis!' I bombed. Oh my God. It was terrible. It was awful."

On the bright side, Burnett met Presley that night and got his autograph for her sister. "He was very sweet," she told Colbert.

"The Ed Sullivan Show" originally aired from 1948 to 1971. Colbert noted that Burnett was on the show seven times, a number that surprised her. "I was?" she asked. Burnett's own self-titled variety show ran on CBS from 1967 to 1978.

While chatting with Colbert, Burnett remembered another awful television appearance, although this time, it was awful on purpose. The "Carol Burnett Show" star explained that when she was nervous to be a guest on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson," she decided that she would intentionally be the "world's worst guest" without telling the talk show host beforehand. So during the show, Burnett repeatedly answered Carson's questions with "yes" or "no" answers.

"Of course, he caught on, and he started asking all kinds of interesting questions, to which I could just say, 'Maybe. No,'" she said.

Speaking of Presley, Burnett also looked back on when she performed a song on TV called "I Made a Fool of Myself Over John Foster Dulles," which imagined a young girl obsessing over the "dull" U.S. secretary of state the way most girls did about Presley.

"All hell broke loose" after Burnett performed the song on the Jack Paar and Ed Sullivan shows, she said, recalling that it "was front-page news" at the time.

The Emmy winner's television career has spanned more than 60 years, and her latest role is opposite Kristen Wiig in "Palm Royale," now streaming on Apple TV+.

Read more at usatoday.com.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Former U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, who nearly won the vice presidency on the Democratic ticket with Al Gore in the disputed 2000 election and who almost became Republican John McCain's running mate eight years later, has died, according to a statement issued by his family.

Lieberman died in New York City on Wednesday due to complications from a fall, the statement said. He was 82.

The Democrat-turned-independent was never shy about veering from the party line.

Lieberman's independent streak and especially his needling of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential contest rankled many Democrats, the party he aligned with in the Senate. Yet his support for gay rights, civil rights, abortion rights and environmental causes at times won him the praise of many liberals over the years.

“In an era of political carbon copies, Joe Lieberman was a singularity. One of one," said Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, a Democrat. "He fought and won for what he believed was right and for the state he adored.”

Over the last decade, Lieberman helped lead No Labels, a centrist third-party movement that has said it will offer as-yet-unnamed candidates for president and vice president this year. Some groups aligned with Democrats oppose the effort, fearing it will help presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump win the White House.

The group on Wednesday called Lieberman's unexpected death a “profound loss,” describing him as “a singular figure in American political life who always put his country before party.”

Lieberman came tantalizingly close to winning the vice presidency in the contentious 2000 presidential contest that was decided by a 537-vote margin victory for George W. Bush in Florida after a drawn-out recount, legal challenges and a Supreme Court decision. He was the first Jewish candidate on a major party’s presidential ticket and would have been the first Jewish vice president.

Gore said in a statement Wednesday night that he was profoundly saddened by the death of his one-time running mate. He called Lieberman “a truly gifted leader, whose affable personality and strong will made him a force to be reckoned with" and said his dedication to equality and fairness started at a young age, noting Lieberman traveled to the South to join the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

“It was an honor to stand side-by-side with him on the campaign trail,” Gore said.

Lieberman sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004 but dropped out after a weak showing in the early primaries. Four years later, he was an independent who was nearly chosen to be McCain’s running mate. He and McCain were close pals who shared hawkish views on military and national security matters.

McCain was leaning strongly toward choosing Lieberman for the ticket as the 2008 GOP convention neared, but he chose Sarah Palin at the last minute after “ferocious” blowback from conservatives over Lieberman’s liberal record, according to Steve Schmidt, who managed McCain’s campaign.

Lieberman generated controversy in 1998 when he scolded Bill Clinton, his friend of many years, for “disgraceful behavior” in an explosive speech on the Senate floor during the height of the scandal over his relationship with Monica Lewinsky. Yet Lieberman later voted against the Clinton's impeachment.

Though he had a tortured relationship with Democrats, Lieberman defended his partisan switches as a matter of conscience, saying he always had the best interests of Connecticut voters at heart. Critics accused him of pursuing narrow self-interest and political expediency.

In announcing his retirement from the Senate in 2013, Lieberman acknowledged that he did “not always fit comfortably into conventional political boxes” and felt his first responsibility was to serve his constituents, state and country, not his political party.

During his final Senate speech, Lieberman urged Congress to look beyond party lines and partisan rancor to break Washington gridlock.

“It requires reaching across the aisle and finding partners from the opposite party,” said Lieberman. “That is what is desperately needed in Washington now.”

Harry Reid, who served as Senate Democratic leader, once said that while he didn’t always agree with the independent-minded Lieberman, he respected him.

“Regardless of our differences, I have never doubted Joe Lieberman’s principles or his patriotism,” Reid said. “And I respect his independent streak, as it stems from strong convictions.”

Privately, some Democrats were often less charitable about Lieberman’s forays across party lines, which they saw as disloyal. He bolted his party and turned independent after a 2006 Senate primary loss in Connecticut.

Lieberman’s strong support of the Iraq War had hurt his statewide popularity. Democrats rejected Lieberman and handed the 2006 primary to a political newcomer and an anti-war candidate, Ned Lamont, who is now serving a second term as Connecticut governor. Citing his Senate experience, congressional clout and support for the state's defense industry, Lieberman went on to win reelection to a fourth term as an independent.

Many of his Democratic allies and longtime friends, including former Sen. Chris Dodd, had supported Lamont in that election. Lieberman was candid about what he considered a betrayal by old pals such as Dodd, but the two men later reconciled.

In a statement issued Wednesday expressing condolences, Lamont said he and Lieberman eventually became friends after their grueling and contentious race.

“While the senator and I had our political differences, he was a man of integrity and conviction, so our debate about the Iraq War was serious,” Lamont said in a statement. “I believe we agreed to disagree from a position of principle."

“When the race was over, we stayed in touch as friends in the best traditions of American democracy. He will be missed," he added.

After his rebound reelection in 2006, Lieberman decided to caucus with Democrats in the Senate, who let him head a committee in return because they needed his vote to help keep control of the closely divided chamber. But it wasn’t long until Lieberman was showing his independent streak and ruffling his Democratic caucus colleagues.

Despite the decision of Democrats to let him join their caucus as an independent, Lieberman was an enthusiastic backer of McCain in the 2008 presidential contest.

Lieberman’s speech at the 2008 GOP presidential nominating convention criticizing Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, struck a deep nerve with many Democrats.

Lieberman cast Obama as a political show horse, a lightweight with a thin record of accomplishment in the Senate despite his soaring eloquence as a speaker.

“In the Senate, during the 3 1/2 years that Sen. Obama has been a member, he has not reached across party lines to ... accomplish anything significant, nor has he been willing to take on powerful interest groups in the Democratic Party to get something done,” Lieberman said at the convention.

“Eloquence is no substitute for a record,” he said.

Lieberman campaigned heartily across the country for McCain. Many Democrats considered it a betrayal to Obama and his former party colleagues.

“Joe Lieberman has said things that are totally irresponsible when it comes to Barack Obama,” House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said in a radio interview during the 2008 race. On Wednesday, Pelosi called Lieberman a “leader of integrity and patriotism” while acknowledging they often disagreed on politics in a message posted on X.

After the election, there was speculation Senate Democrats might strip Lieberman of his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee as payback. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., chair of the Judiciary Committee, was among those who said Lieberman should lose his chairmanship. Leahy branded Lieberman’s attacks on Obama as “beyond the pale.”

But at Obama’s urging, Senate Democrats decided not to punish Lieberman for supporting McCain and the GOP ticket. Obama was eager to strike a bipartisan tone for his presidency and giving Lieberman a pass helped reinforce that message. On Wednesday, Obama acknowledged they “didn't always see eye-to-eye,” but noted Lieberman had an “extraordinary career in public service.”

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent and staunch liberal, called Lieberman's convention comments a “slap in the face” for millions of Americans who backed Obama.

Connecticut Democrats considered censuring Lieberman. Longtime friend and former chairman of the state party, Nick Balletto, acknowledged many were unhappy with Lieberman and how that discontent overshadowed everything he had done for the state. Before the U.S. Senate, Lieberman served in the state Senate and as Connecticut attorney general.

“He was the most genuine, honest, straightforward politician you’d probably ever meet. What you saw is what you got,” Balletto said. “His issues were the issues of the people. ... He didn’t move because it was where the wind wanted to be today. He stayed strong in what he believed in his heart and his mind.”

Lieberman was known in the Senate for his hawkish foreign policy views, his pro-defense bent and his strong support for environmental causes.

Five weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, he became one of the first politicians to call for the ouster of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and later voted in favor of the military invasion of Iraq. His vocal support for the war would later help doom his candidacy in the 2006 Connecticut Democratic primary.

Lieberman tended to vote with Democrats on most issues and was a longtime supporter of abortion rights, a stance that would have proved problematic with conservatives had McCain chosen him as his running mate in 2008.

He played a key role in the legislation that created the Department of Homeland Security.

Lieberman grew up in Stamford, Connecticut, where his father ran a liquor store. Lieberman graduated from Yale University and Yale Law School in New Haven. As Connecticut’s attorney general from 1983 to 1988, he was a strong consumer and environmental advocate. Lieberman vaulted into the Senate by defeating moderate Republican incumbent Lowell Weicker in 1988.

After leaving the Senate in 2013, Lieberman joined a New York City law firm. His funeral will be held Friday at Congregation Agudath Sholom in his hometown of Stamford. An additional memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Lieberman and his wife, Hadassah, have four children.

Eileen O'Neill Burke's lead over Clayton Harris III in the Democratic primary for Cook County state's attorney grew slightly Wednesday after a week of steady shrinking, but the ever so tight contest remains unresolved.

The latest batches of mail-in ballots tabulated by city and suburban election officials show O'Neill Burke leading Harris by 1,637 votes, a slight increase from Tuesday, when the two were separated by 1,598 votes.

Based on the unofficial results, O'Neill Burke, a retired appellate court justice, now leads Harris, a university lecturer, 50.16% to 49.84%. That margin is only a hundredths of a percentage point different from Tuesday's.

The campaigns are in somewhat of a holding pattern as the methodical counting of mail-in votes continues now more than a week after polls closed on March 19. Election officials have said the counting will continue until the April 2 deadline to certify a winner.

Both campaigns have indicated they are prepared for a range of outcomes, which Harris' team has said include a potential recount. State law doesn't allow automatic recounts. If the current margin holds, Harris would have to request one and his campaign would be responsible for paying for it.

"Given the evolving dynamics in this race since Election Day, it is important to wait and ensure every vote is counted through the April 2 deadline," a spokesperson for the Harris campaign said on Wednesday.

That came after the Cook County clerk's office said it tallied 255 mail ballots on Wednesday, while the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners said it processed just over 2,800.

A Chicago Board of Election Commissioners staff member initially logged the incorrect number of provisional ballots received on election day, reporting 2,882 ballots instead of 1,882, officials said Monday. Staff performed a hand count and determined there were 1,991 provisional ballots from election day and early voting.

Another correction was issued Saturday when city election officials announced that roughly 10,000 votes were added to the unofficial count. Max Bever, spokesperson for the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners, said in a statement that he had mistakenly left out ballots received by mail on the evening of March 18, a day before the primary, in previous totals.

Alex Caruso was told last summer to be more aggressive on the offensive end. The Bulls guard is proving to be a good listener.

Nam Y. Huh/AP

Pacers guard Ben Sheppard wasn’t the outlier as much as the latest victim.

With 2:27 left in the first quarter Wednesday, Bulls guard Alex Caruso took Sheppard right, crossed the ball to his left and hit the brakes. It was at that moment that Sheppard found out how gravity worked. He lost his balance trying to contest the move and fell backward to the floor while Caruso hit a pull-up jumper.

Not bad for a defense-only player.

It’s the point Bulls coach Billy Donovan has been stressing to Caruso since last summer: Being named first-team all-defense last season was a great accomplishment, but his offensive skills shouldn’t just lurk in the shadows.

“To his credit, we talked to him a lot going into this season about how we felt that he bypassed a lot of shots [in previous years],” Donovan said. “He’s done a really good job of shooting the ball and shooting with confidence. Generally, when someone is really good at something, it overshadows other things that they’re good at. He’s obviously incredible defensively and at what he does — hustle plays, loose balls and deflections. It’s incredible, those things really stand out.

“But you know what? He’s a good pick-and-roll player [offensively], good pace and tempo. He’s got good vision, he’s smart, he knows how to manipulate matchups, how to get in and out of screens. You can use him as a screener. I think some of that stuff goes unnoticed with him in a lot of ways. He’s always been a guy, even being a guard, he’s not like, ‘I need the ball in my hands.’ He’ll do whatever it is that he needs to do in order to help the team.”

That’s why Caruso found himself going into the matchup with the Pacers averaging career highs in points (10) and three-point attempts (4.6).

He has worked on his offensive game, and the coaching staff is willing to let him showcase those improvements.

“I do think he’s done a really good job offensively,” Donovan said. “He’s put a lot of work into it. For him it’s been he really didn’t get drafted; he had to go to the G League for a while. Then he gets to the Lakers, and he plays this [defensive] role for some time, so for an older player, his game continues to evolve. And there are more opportunities for it to evolve.”

No April Fools

Donovan said the plan was to have injured players Lonzo Ball (knee), Zach LaVine (right foot) and Patrick Williams (left foot) on the bench Monday, when the Bulls host the Hawks.

Ball and LaVine have been rehabbing with their own medical people in Los Angeles but keep an open line of communication with the Bulls’ medical staff, including check-ins.

Both were at the Clippers game earlier this month when the Bulls were in Los Angeles.

Next step

Donovan already has a to-do list put together for Coby White to continue his ascension to All-Star, and one box he wants to see his fifth-year guard check in the offseason is consistency in the shooting department.

White has hot streaks but also goes through some serious lulls.

“That will be an area of growth for him,” Donovan said.

The city plans to overhaul a mile-long section of Division Street over Goose Island with new bridges, protected bike lanes and more left-turn lanes. But bikers expressed concerns about how some of the proposals would affect their safety.

The project, expected to last over the next two years, aims to address the deterioration of two bridges — one on Division Street and the other on Chicago Avenue. The project will improve vehicular and pedestrian access, while providing bicycle accommodations.

“Now would be the time to develop a structure that meets Complete Streets standards and is kind of the gold standard of what a bikeable bridge in this case can be,” said Dave Simmons, the executive director of Ride Illinois.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Complete Streets are streets designed and operated to enable safe use and support mobility for all users. Those include people of all ages and abilities, regardless of whether they are driving, walking, cycling, or using public transportation.

The Chicago Department of Transportation previously outlined plans to improve bikeability by adding 150 miles of new and upgraded bikeways. Of Chicago’s 4,000 miles of streets, one-tenth have protected bike lanes, neighborhood greenways, off-street trails or other on-street bikeways, the agency said.

The city proposes adding concrete-protected bike lanes along the section of Division Street that currently does not have any. These lanes would connect to the existing bike network on Clybourn Avenue, Halsted Street and Elston Avenue, CDOT said.

“The project includes many improvements to enhance safety for people using modes of transportation, including pedestrian refuge islands, traffic signal modernization, wider sidewalks, new bike lanes, improved lighting and more,” CDOT said in a statement.

Paths along the new bridges will have buffered bike lanes. Alex Perez, a representative of Active Transportation Alliance, said that without concrete barriers, safety remains a concern.

Perez suggested guardrails as an alternative, which he said offer better physical protection from vehicles steering into the bike lane.

There will also be pavement markings with symbols and arrows to delineate bike lanes across intersections. Pavement markings will be green to reinforce biker priority, according to a CDOT presentation from a community meeting.

“Visibility does help,” Perez said. “It makes it clear for drivers where the bike lane is.”

Biking advocates also raised concerns about potential collisions with proposed traffic lanes. Kyle Lucas, a representative of Better Streets Chicago, said the transition lane from Division Street to Elston Avenue is “unacceptable” because drivers take a “wide, sweeping turn,” instead of a tighter one.

“It honestly feels like deja vu,” Lucas said. “We just had to have some very similar conversations like this around the Chicago and Halsted intersection.”

To offer input on the project, Chicagoans can email the CDOT by April 26.
