Two hurt in basement fire at South Side high-rise

A basement caught fire Tuesday night in a 22-story high-rise building in the Douglas neighborhood on the South Side.

The fire started just before 8 p.m. in the basement of the building in the 500 block of East 32nd Street, according to Fire Media Affairs.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 8:30 p.m., and paramedics took two people in fair-to-serious condition to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, Fire Media Affairs said.

Two other people refused medical treatment, officials said.

Crews ventilated the building and allowed the residents back inside by 9 p.m.
