Fueling Up for Early Summer
Road America is gearing up for the summer season with a wide variety of public events, two of which are coming soon:
June 1-3: American Motorcyclists Association (AMA) Pro riders will push the edge of the envelope on two wheels during the AMA Subway SuperBike Doubleheader. Qualifying starts Friday with riders reaching record-breaking speeds in three multi-manufacturer classes: SuperBike, SportBike and SuperSport. Qualifying continues on Saturday morning and each class has a race on Saturday afternoon and Sunday.
June 8th-10th: Road America will be hosting the Vintage Motorcycle Classic, co-presented with the American Historic MotorCycle Racing Association (AHRMA).
The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to restoring and competing on classic motorcycles. With about 4,000 members and growing strong, AHRMA is the largest vintage racing group in North America and one of the biggest in the world. AHRMA Partners with Road America every year to put on this event.
Riders of Norton, Triumph, BMW and other classic vintage bikes will participate in such events as road racing, motocross, cross country trials, club corrals and a moving bike show. There will even be a swap meet, where racers, enthusiasts and fans will exchange their bike parts, goods and wares.
One event featured at the Classic that's gaining traction among young racers and enthusiasts is cafe racing. This gets its name from early twentieth century Europe, where motorcycle riders would hang out in cafes and exchange auto parts to use on each others bikes. Cafe racers mix and match various stock parts, replace seats, lower the handlebars and perform other alterations to give their bikes more style and speed. Today, with the accessibility and cheapness of old parts and the popularity of Do-It-Yourself activities, more and more young people are taking up this tradition.
