Explore nature's glory
Explore nearly four miles of trails through restored woodlands, prairie and wetlands at Taltree Arboretum & Gardens in Valparaiso, Ind. Learn about the number of oak species grown in temperate climates in "Oak Islands," an outdoor exhibit showcasing oaks of Europe, Asia and North America, plus understory plants associated with the environment in which they are naturally found.
Pack a picnic and enjoy Taltree's award-winning Railway Garden, which stands out from similar displays by virtue of its elevation changes, numerous water features, hand-crafted bridges and vignettes that pay tribute to the steam era of American railroad history. First and foremost a garden, the display boasts hundreds of scale-sized plants selected for the range of micro-climates produced by the varied topography. The path around the exhibit is wheelchair accessible, and was designed to remediate water run-off and provide water for all of the features and to provide supplemental irrigation.
Visit the Trumpeter Swans in the wetlands, the Monarch Watch Waystation and a new children's garden. It's a work in progress, designed with kids in mind that will offer entertaining and educational opportunities in a safe, family-oriented environment.
Take home a wealth of inspiration from the themed gardens, including the Hitz Family Rose Garden, Native Plant, Pavilion and Welcome gardens. All form the living classroom that supports important educational opportunities, research and conservation programs.
