Learn keys to online dating (like avoid the married guys)

November 10, 2009

Your profile picture is perfection, your dreams for love and life written in clear and clever prose.

But if you're spending more time looking at JDate.com than actually going on dates, maybe you could learn something from the new one-day class being offered Friday by Harper College in Palatine -- "Online Dating; Be Safe, Be Smart, Be Successful."

"If you don't work in a big company or are out of school, it's harder to meet people," says instructor Ava Whaley, who met her husband online. "Even with all its pitfalls, it's the best way to meet people today."

Whaley will take her students through setting up a promising profile on a variety of different dating sites to where to meet and what to say when you step out from behind the monitor.

She'll also address how to handle online-dating pitfalls -- like the estimated 20 percent to 40 percent of men who are, um, married, but trolling the Web for dates.

Register at harpercollege .edu or by calling (847) 925-6300. Registration costs $35.
