On the record with ... Kevin Butler

February 4, 2007
The former Bears kicker was a key member of the 1985 championship team.

Why do you think Robbie Gould was able to find himself this season? I talk to Robbie a good bit. I think his work ethic and his confidence help a lot. Once you start doubting yourself, all the problems start happening. Robbie is just brimming with confidence right now. He struggled a little last year but got so much stronger in the offseason, which was really noticeable on his kickoffs and his field goals. He's on right now.

Were you rooting for him to break your franchise record of 24 field goals in a row? Absolutely. It was a thrill for me to break it because it was the NFL record at that time. It's been broken several times since. I appreciate it because I know how hard it is to do.

Are you pulling for the Bears? Absolutely. I may not have retired a Bear, but I consider myself a Bear.

Are you surprised how popular you guys are 21 years later? Not really. That team had characters and personality that did more for the NFL and the marketing of the NFL than any other team ever. And we just captured the hearts in the city of Chicago. Hopefully, this team can do the same thing. I don't think they'll replace us, but I think our Super Bowl parties will just be a little bigger.

Who would win a game between the '85 Bears and these Bears? Our team, as long as Robbie wouldn't have to kick a field goal.

Do you give Robbie tips? No. The only tip I would say to a kicker who's kicking good is ''Good morning'' and ''Good night.''
