BOURBONNAIS — Special-teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis wants to see rookie receiver Marquess Wilson hit and tackle somebody.
How well the slimly built Wilson does that will affect his chances to make the 53-man roster. Wilson showed what he can do as a receiver in the Bears’ preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers, breaking loose for a 58-yard reception. But with other receivers in front of him, he needs to be able to contribute on special teams.
‘‘We’re going to put him out there and see what he can do,’’ DeCamillis said. ‘‘We’d like to see what kind of a contact player he is. We’ve all seen him run, but we need to see what kind of contact player he is. We’re looking forward to it this week.’’
Wilson has worked this week with the second-team offense, but he also has been inserted into special teams, including being a gunner on one punt unit. Wilson, who’s just 20, didn’t play special teams at Washington State.
‘‘It’s fun — I mean, for the first time playing it, it’s fun,’’ he said. ‘‘You never know what to expect. But it’s just about who wants to win the most on special teams, and that’s how you’ve got to do it.’’
Scott improving
Offensive tackle Jonathan Scott’s right knee was drained, and it’s possible he’ll return to the line rotation by next week.
‘‘We should see some movement in the right direction in the next few days and the next week,’’ coach Marc Trestman said. ‘‘He was actually with the doctors today. [Trainer] Chris [Hanks] came over to tell me that, said the results were very good.’’
In and out
Receiver Brandon Marshall and defensive end Julius Peppers didn’t play against the Panthers, but Trestman said both could
play against San Diego Chargers
at Soldier Field.
Running backs Armando Allen (hamstring) and Harvey Unga (ribs), long snapper Patrick Mannelly (ribs), linebacker D.J. Williams (calf) and defensive end Cheta Ozougwu (hamstring) all sat out practice Tuesday.
Receiver Earl Bennett (concussion) and defensive tackle Henry Melton (concussion) did not attend practice.
