With its playoff hopes on life support, the Fire gets a double dose of Chivas this week. Chivas, a popular Mexican club based in Guadalajara, visits Toyota Park on Wednesday, and MLS foe Chivas USA comes to town Saturday.
Wednesday’s match is the last friendly of the season. The Fire (4-8-15) will use it to erase memories of Saturday’s disappointing 2-0 road loss to the San Jose Earthquakes. That defeat left the Fire seven points out of an MLS playoff berth with just seven games left.
‘‘We just weren’t good enough with the ball in the second half,’’ interim coach Frank Klopas said after his team’s three-game winning streak was snapped. ‘‘We weren’t forcing the ball. There were turnovers in the middle of the field. We weren’t doing enough in the final third.’’
A repeat performance could mean a blowout loss Wednesday. In addition to being in contention for the Mexican title, Chivas defeated Spanish powerhouse Barcelona in a friendly earlier this summer.
Chivas coach Jose Luis Real is bringing a veteran roster, including defenders Hector Reynoso and Jonny Magallon and forwards Alberto Medina and Omar Arellano, for its second meeting with the Fire.
The Fire is 6-9-3 in friendlies against clubs from Mexico, England, Italy, Germany, France, Scotland and Poland. In its only previous meeting with Chivas, the Fire lost 1-0 at Soldier Field in 2000.
Chivas has made many Chicago appearances over the years and has been a consistently good draw.
Chivas USA (7-11-10) is also struggling and finds itself 10 points out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Fire has designated Saturday’s 3 p.m. match as Hispanic Heritage Day.
