The enrollments of Marian Central and Montini, rated 1-2 in the state in Class 5A, aren't that large. The talent ... that's another story.
In a game that featured as many big-time Division I prospects as any high school game in Illinois this fall, the No. 15 Broncos cruised to a 33-0 Suburban Catholic victory over No. 10 Marian Central on Friday night in Woodstock.
It was a battle of linemen that drew a big crowd, including CLTV analyst Tom Lemming. Montini's Ohio State-bound Garrett Goebel (6-5, 270) was pitted against Marian's Notre Dame-bound Sean Cwynar (6-4, 290). The Broncos (7-0, 5-0) also count on Northwestern commitment Chuck Porcelli (6-8, 285) while the Hurricanes (6-1, 3-1) have one of the area's best juniors in Cody O'Neill (6-3, 275).
But this game belonged to the little guys -- Montini's 5-8 John Borsellino, 5-10 quarterback Tom DiChristina and Wisconsin-bound running back Dex Jones, who scored second-half touchdowns on a 42-yard catch and an eight-yard run.
''The big guys [Cwynar and Goebel] played both ways and really didn't have that big an effect on the game,'' Lemming said. ''They are the two best linemen in the state, but they neutralized each other. And they both looked like much better offensive players. The story was the little guys.''
Said Jones: ''The biggest thing about our offensive line is that we are put in a position where we can run and not think. We know this is big, and we lost to them 24-0 last year. But we know that we'll see them again in the playoffs.
''We really are not caught up in Garrett going to Ohio State and Chuck to Northwestern or me to Wisconsin.
''We're a team with a lot of goals. Winning here was one of them.''
After an exchange of punts, Montini got field position at its 44 and scored in eight plays, with Borsellino covering the last 26 yards with a run to make it 6-0. DiChristina was 4-for-4 throwing on the drive.
With 5:13 to play in the half. Montini made it 9-0 when Sean Cahill booted a 28-yard field goal.
Then, Montini's Dan Stelter intercepted a pass and returned it 24 yards to the Marian 28. On a fourth-and-eight at the 10, Borsellino threw a touchdown pass on an option to a wide-open Sal Mazzulla for a 16-0 lead.
