Suppo Sanni, the 6-4 wide receiver/defensive back for Homewood-Flossmoor, has 10 scholarship offers, including Illinois, Michigan State, Louisville, Iowa and Iowa State. But West Virginia, which tossed its hat into the ring only recently, might have an edge.

''I must see West Virginia and Louisville and get more details,'' he said. ''I was excited when West Virginia offered. I had been talking to them for a long time, hoping they would offer. It's a top-five program.

''I know a lot about the school. My sister, Olayinka, is a senior there. I won't say they have an edge, but I know a lot about the school.''

Sanni will keep his options open while he waits for more Big 10 and SEC schools to express interest. He doesn't plan to make a decision until after his official visits. H-F teammate and close friend Russell Ellington also has an offer from Iowa State, and both players have offers from Western Michigan, so it still is a possibility they will attend the same school.

''Recruiting is getting crazier and crazier,'' Sanni said. ''I never imagined this. I always was a basketball player. But I realized there were a lot of 6-4 basketball players. Then it became real big in football. I didn't know it would be this big. But now, I realize football is my sport.''

ALL-STAR STAFF: No wonder Prairie Ridge is 5-0. Coach Chris Schremp has assembled an all-star staff with offensive coordinator Bill Mack, who was 122-57-1 in 20 years at Crystal Lake Central; secondary coach Bob Bradshaw (152-87-1 in 25 years), who won a state championship at Woodstock; running backs coach Grant Blaney (125-44 in 15 years), who won a state title at Buffalo Grove; and defensive coordinator Andy Peterson, who played for Mack and Blaney at North Central College.

The Wolves are led by running back Sam Campbell, who has rushed 80 times for 641 yards, caught 12 passes for 193 yards and scored 13 touchdowns. Other leaders are junior QB Bryan Bradshaw (42-for-75, 634 yards), grandson of Bob Bradshaw and son of former Woodstock and Northwestern QB Gregg Bradshaw; junior free safety Will Mack, grandson of Bill Mack; senior middle linebacker Zack Zuidema; and senior kicker/punter Cullen Fahey, who beat Cary-Grove with a 43-yard field goal with three seconds to play.

FAMILY AFFAIR: Whitney Young coach Tim Franken credits his team's 5-0 start to an ''athletic defense that runs around and gets to the ball'' while allowing only one touchdown. It is led by end Alan Roberts, tackle Ayinde Arnett and linebackers Jordan McCord, Sam Spitz and Trevor Wilkins. Spitz is committed to Yale.

The Dolphins' schedule permits Franken to attend most of his son Tim's games. A running back for state power Driscoll, the younger Franken averages 10 yards per carry. He is interested in Georgetown, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan.

''It's fun to watch him play, like any other parent,'' the coach said. ''It's relaxing for me. He is on his own. I worked with him when he was growing up, but I don't believe in interfering. He has his own coaches. I just try to be supportive of the program.''

ON THE MARKET: Kevin Finney, Lake Forest's 6-6 wide receiver, hopes his senior tapes will attract more interest from recruiters. He is considering Indiana, Purdue, Iowa State and Miami (Ohio).

COVERT ACTION: Add Lake Forest's Scott Covert to the list of outstanding junior prospects. The 6-2, 230-pound defensive tackle credits his father, former Bears offensive tackle Jimbo Covert, for encouraging him to switch from center to the defensive line.

''I prefer defense," said Covert, who played last year in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. ''I can create more havoc as a defensive tackle. I feel stronger at that position. My dad gave me good advice. 'Wherever they put you, you'll be good at it,' he told me. He motivates me a lot.''
