Andrew Narro had an
incredible week of fishing for northern pike last month on the Des Plaines River. A 36-inch pike earned him Fish of the Week honors.

‘‘The size of all these fish just shocked the heck out of me,’’ the Lemont youth e-mailed. ‘‘The fishing is improving year by year.’’

The string of pike started with a 28-incher Sept. 14. He had a 33-incher Sept. 19, then the big one Sept. 20.

‘‘My one problem on this particular day is that I ran out of line on all my rods, so my dad gave me a very light finesse rod with 10-pound line,’’ Narro e-mailed.

After a slow start, he latched into his big one while casting a Mepps gold No. 5 spinner in 4 or 5 feet.

‘‘Man, did she fight,’’ Narro e-mailed. ‘‘It didn’t even surface for about two to three minutes. As soon as it surfaced, it ran off again. I finally got him up to the boat .  .  . and my dad nets him gladly.’’
