Good thing Dave Gonnella “threw a few fishing poles in the minivan’’ Saturday.

“My two sons look forward to your fish-of-the- week column every week,’’ he said. “We finally landed a fish we thought would be worthy of sending.’’

His youngest son, Joe, 8, did that. After the boys finished running for St. Benedict’s in the elementary school division at the 39th annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational at Montrose Harbor, Joe grabbed his ice-fishing rod.

Using 4-pound line, he dropped a 1/32-ounce, painted, round jighead in before his dad even realized it had no soft plastics on it. Didn’t matter. Within minutes, Joe hooked a 26-inch brown trout.“Luckily, the fisherman next to us had a net to help land the fish,’’ said Gonnella, who estimated it at 6.5 pounds from fish charts.
