A soccer game Saturday morning kept Grant Farmer out of the deer stand on opening day of bowhunting until the afternoon. Then the 15-year-old from Crete made good use of his time and earned Buck of the Week honors.

“He was in the stand about 45 minutes when his buck showed up,’’ his dad, John Farmer, said. “We have quite a few trail-cam pics of this deer. He kept telling me all summer he was going to wait for a P&Y. I told him to just hunt, don’t be picky, shoot a few deer and enjoy gaining experience.’’

P&Y is shorthand for a buck qualifying for bowhunting records kept by the Pope and Young Club. Farmer’s 8-point, bagged in Will County, is not in that class, but a worthy first buck taken with a bow.
