Q: Last time I fished Lake Erie was in the early ’90s, and the guide we used is now retired. Any recommendations for a guide to go after the giants in April?’’ —Nate
A: My Lake Erie walleye fishing has been with Joe McCartin, prefishing for tournaments. So I asked a friend — who has had outstanding success for big walleye — whom he used. He recommended Double “D’’ Guide Service, (419) 798-9195 or doubledguideservice.com, not just for the walleye fishing but because they offer alternatives with smallmouth or perch, if walleye are off.

BUCK OF THE WEEK: UNPLUGGED
In a first, we have a second, later photo for BOTW: Unplugged, the weekly celebration of live big bucks around Chicago outdoors. ‘‘Thought you’d be interested in seeing updated photos of the buck who frequents our backyard here in Edgebrook,’’ Mary Sweeney Harrington e-mailed. ‘‘This is the buck whose photo we sent to you a few weeks ago [Aug. 14 Sun-Times]. You can see how his antlers have grown over the summer.’’ E-mail nominations to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Chinook salmon continue to be caught on the Chicago shoreline, despite persistent north/northeast winds and roiled waters. Mike Repa at Park Bait said some coho are mixed in at Montrose. Salmon are beginning to enter Indiana streams, according to Lake Michigan fisheries biologist Brian Breidert.
