DALE’S MAILBAG

Q: I have gotten into this wonderful hobby [of rod building], and I’m looking to get some instruction in it. Would you know of any classes in the area? The closest one I can find is Minneapolis. I’m midway thru my second rod. I’ll enclose some pictures for you to take a look at. — Adam Verwolf

A: I can see why he likes this. The photos he sent are wonderful. According to friends who build rods, in Chicago, the place for rod-building classes is Coren’s Rod and Reel Service (773) 631-5202 at 6001 N. Nina Ave. Normally, Eric Heckman has winter classes. But he said his next scheduled class is in the spring and will be on bamboo rods.

BUCK OF THE WEEK: UNPLUGGED

‘‘I was golfing at Billy Caldwell Golf Course yesterday, and I hooked a shot into the woods,’’ Greg Lopatka e-mailed. ‘‘When I went to see where my ball landed, this eight-point buck was looking at me like I was crazy.’’ The Downers Grove man sent what is now my favorite story for BOTW: Unplugged, the weekly celebration of live big bucks around Chicago outdoors.
