A boy with a jumbo perch and a man with a surprise walleye double up on Fish of the Week.
Corina Melniciuc nominated her brother Paul for winning the kid’s perch portion of the Richard J. Daley Sportfishing Derby in July. The 10-year-old caught his 14 1/2 -inch perch at Burnham Harbor. It weighed 1 pound, 5.4 ounces on the certified scale at Henry’s Sports and Bait.
Meanwhile, Russell Pienta hooked a surprise 24-inch walleye in a Plainfield retention pond while bass fishing. “I have been fishing this lake for the last 10 years and have caught many big bass and crappie but never a walleye,’’ he e-mailed. “It nailed my Bomber Fat A crankbait and for a minute I thought I had a huge bass, until I got it close to shore and saw what a beautiful walleye it was. “I know people who have gone to Canada to catch fish like this and I got one pretty much right in my own back yard.’’ That’s the nature of FOTW.
