It has been a tough year for smallmouth bass on the Chicago lakefront. But for his first smallmouth, Scott Mascio caught a beauty around noon Friday near the pipe at Burnham Harbor to earn Fish of the Week honors.

He was drop-shotting a Gulp! Alive! Goby. The smallmouth weighed 3 pounds, 8 ounces on a digital scale before being released. It looked bigger than that to me.

‘‘This was my first smallmouth I have ever caught,’’ Mascio e-mailed. ‘‘I think it’s a pretty good size for that species.’’

Yes. And it gave Mascio the full experience.

‘‘Jumped and took drag; lucky I got it up,’’ he e-mailed. ‘‘I didn’t have a net, but I had PowerPro 15-pound-test [line]. Lucky, ha. I’ve done most of my fishing in Florida for largemouth. I guess this was beginner’s luck with the smallie.’’
