In a surf-and-turf version of Fish of the Week, Kevin McShea of Villa Park caught an 18 1/2 -inch crappie from a state lake in Pope County over the Fourth of July weekend.

‘‘He went out to this lake with my son Bobby Drazdik Jr.,’’ said McShea’s uncle Bob Drazdik Sr. ‘‘And when they got back to my deer camp to show me, I told them that not only big bucks come out of Pope County, but big crappies must, too.’’

For reference, the three Illinois records for crappie are around 4

1/2 pounds: hybrid, 4.52 pounds, Marcus Miller, Jefferson County farm pond, May 14, 2008; black, 4 pounds, 8 ounces, John Hampton, Rend Lake, May 15, 1976; white, 4-7, Kevin Dennis, Morgan County farm pond, April 8, 1973.
