The two Fish of the Week caught Saturday at
Shabbona match the glory of the DeKalb County water.

Walter Elerby Jr. of Chicago caught a 17-inch black crappie weighing 2.5 pounds for big-fish honors at the Crappie Open held by Lakeside.

The same day, ‘‘Musky Ed’’ Potocki of Westchester
caught and released a muskie he estimated at 48 inches and 28 pounds on the 318-acre lake an hour west of Chicago.

‘‘I raised her the night before on a Suick, but she would not hit,’’ Potocki e-mailed. ‘‘The next morning I went back with a topwater bait. Same spot, a haunt with shallow cribs and deep water nearby. She crushed the bait at boatside on a figure-8 and jumped twice.’’

Shabbona, Illinois’ most-fished lake per acre, has
produced four state records for pure and tiger muskies and the first two state
records for hybrid crappie.
