The outstanding spring for salmon fishing in
southern Lake Michigan — weather permitting, of course — has expanded from coho to include good early chinook, such as the 13-pound king Joe Littrell caught while trolling an orange Wiggle Wart on
April 9 outside Portage, Ind.
‘‘The interesting thing is the tail is shaped like a coho, but it has the
markings of a king,’’ the south suburban man e-mailed of his Fish of the Week. ‘‘It’s a tough call for me to answer which one it is. A hybrid, maybe. I got the same response from my local fishing store, Fishing Connection in Tinley Park.’’
Indiana biologist Brian Breidert thought the
markings were chinook.
