Between thunderstorms March 20, Grigorije Beljanski jigged up a 24-inch largemouth bass on a medium golden roach from Lake Milliken at Des Plaines Fish and Wildlife Area.
“After this one, I caught five more in 14- to 16-inch range,’’ e-mailed the Cicero man, who is 6-2. “All the fishes were released after a lil’ photo shoot, like I always do.’’
Two big largemouth earn Fish of the Week honors, reminders that March bass fishing may be tough, but rewarding.
On a south suburban pond earlier this month, Ken “Husker’’ O’Malley caught his first nice, open-water bass of 2011 on a lipless crankbait.
“This was the second year in a row that this pond gave up a nice bass the day after ice out,’’ the Mokena man e-mailed. “Both bass were caught on the same lure on a sunny day. This pond gives up the biggest bass the first two months after ice out.’’
