Ken O’Malley took advantage of a much-needed day off from work to go ice fishing with his daughter Hailey, who was off from school on the same day.
‘‘My daughter took me to school,’’ e-mailed O’Malley, a Mokena man. ‘‘She was 4-of-5 on tip-ups. The only reason she missed the one was because I was helping her get the hook out of one while another flag went off on the other side of the pond. By the time we got there, the bass dropped the bait.
‘‘She also caught one bluegill after another with a bonus crappie in the mix. All fish were caught on a CJS Nuclear Ant tipped with multiple spikes. She also learned how to use the flasher today. It was an awesome day on the ice.’’
It has been a good winter for awesome days on the ice for dads and kids. We celebrate that with a pair of Fish of the Week: a nice largemouth bass caught by Hailey and a big catfish caught by Nathan Elkow.
James Elkow of Frankfort said his 15-year-old son ‘‘caught two huge [catfish] and 10 panfish the size of your hand in one hour on a local pond.’’ He was fishing with a Swedish Pimple tipped with a small fathead.
