Those of us with early-season tags knew it was a cold, wet spring in Illinois and stared at our turkey decoys (right). Hunters harvested only 14,133 wild turkeys during the spring season, down from 15,941 in 2012. The record harvest (16,605) was in 2006.
‘‘Breeding activity was delayed, and gobblers were not very responsive for much of the season,’’ said Paul Brewer, the wild-turkey project manager for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Jo Daviess was the top county with 552.
