FISH Of the WEEK
There’s the normal rainbow trout stocked for spring fishing in Illinois. Then there’s what Richard Gryniewski of Mount Prospect pulled out of Axehead Lake on Saturday, the opening day for spring trout.
‘‘Those two were the biggest forest-preserve trout I have ever seen,’’ Jason Fox emailed.
When asked, Jim Phillips, a veteran fisheries biologist for the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, said: ‘‘Cool. They might have been carryovers [from the fall stocking].’’
He said the spring stocking was of the usual half- to three-quarter-pound rainbows.
Fox said they were fishing ultralight gear with PowerBait on the bottom and limited out in less than an hour.
