While vacationing at her grandparents’ house in
Wisconsin, Aimee Heinrich thought she would break in the rod her dad, Gary, had bought for her birthday.
‘‘This fish broke it in, all right!’’ the 17-year-old from Mokena emailed. ‘‘It took me at least five minutes to reel him in. He kept taking line out every time I thought I was getting close to landing him. Man, was he a fighter!’’
The 19.5-inch smallmouth bass weighed about 4.9 pounds.
Heinrich was fishing the Jump River with a small neon-green buzzbait about 8:30 a.m. July 29. He father was using a bigger version of the same lure down the shore.
‘‘I hope to someday get an exact replication of [the smallmouth], so I can hang him in my room for good memories!’’ she emailed.
