Salmon fishing has been good for a few weeks in the Illinois side of Lake Michigan. Scott Mascio’s earns FOTW honors as much for the side tales as the size of his catch in late May.
‘‘I caught this salmon while trolling a white Rapala crankbait, medium diving [9-12 feet], in 70 feet of water, just north of Diversey Harbor,’’ he emailed. ‘‘We had multiple rods out with Dipsy Divers and flies, and put a bass rod out with a crankbait just for fun and that was the one that got hit.’’
The fish weighed 11.2 pounds on a digital scale; then the story grew even tastier.
“We went to the local market [and] got butter, lemon, dill and tin foil, took it back to the harbor and ate it off the grill with plenty to share for both A dock and B dock,’’ Mascio wrote. ‘‘We were not expecting to cook it there, but it was too nice out to pass up.’’
