A lot of young people had TOTW this spring. Let’s end it at the other end of the age spectrum.
Spring turkey hunting in Illinois ended with 15,941 turkeys bagged, well more than the 15,121 in 2011 but less than the record 16,605 in 2006.
After unsuccessful hunts in Iowa, Colorado and Illinois, Bob Molzahn of Barrington shot his first turkey in Whiteside County. The tom was 22.5 pounds and had a 9-inch beard and 1.25-inch spurs. He downed it at 32 yards from a pop-up blind using his over-and-under with a 3-inch, 20-gauge shell with No. 4 shot.
‘‘Used a box call that I learned to use from listening to CDs and watching YouTube,’’ he emailed. ‘‘Just shows you that you’re never too old to learn something new. First turkey at age 60!’’
