Olympic viewers have sex on their minds

Comments

August 21, 2008

By now, after nonstop Olympic coverage and too many late nights in front of the TV, we've gotten to know all the athletes, figured out every sport and seen enough pictures of the Great Wall to last a lifetime.

What's left to ponder? Sex, of course.

A new survey by the online dating service True.com shows that while sex isn't an Olympic sport, it enters many viewers' minds.

The dating site set up the survey online for any of its North American members, ages 18 to 60-plus. In all, 2,191 men and 1,429 women completed the survey over a two-day period.

The results, while not shocking, show that swimming isn't just about Michael Phelps' golden streak. It's also about guys in Speedos. Javelin-throwing isn't just about distance. It's also about a beauty queen from Paraguay.

"Attention is definitely straying,'' said Rupa Patel, a spokeswoman for the dating service. "A lot of it ties back to sex and relationship.''

Here are some of the survey findings.

-- 48 percent of men said gymnasts have the sexiest uniforms.

-- 39 percent of women said swimmers/divers have the sexiest uniforms. Only 1 percent favored cyclists in tight bike shorts.

-- 66 percent of men said gymnasts would be the best in bed (presumably for flexibility reasons). Only 1 percent liked the idea of sleeping with someone skilled with a bow and arrow.

-- 60 percent of men and 50 percent of women said they have dated someone outside their nationality.

-- 33 percent of men and women said they would give their last romantic partners a gold medal for their performance. Sadly, 23 percent of men and 31 percent of women said they would skip the medals altogether and "ban their partner from the sport.''
