What could it cost us, residents ask bid team

July 9, 2009

Mayor Daley's Olympic team faced a mountain of questions Wednesday night from residents concerned whether they'd have to pull out their wallets to host the Games.

If anything, many of the 400 who packed the Southwest Side McKinley Park field house wanted to know what they stand to gain if the city wins the 2016 Summer Games.

Jeffrey Nolan, 43, a carpet layer from Bridgeport, demanded a no-nepotism in hiring guarantee if jobs are created.

"Do you guys have anything in writing that says anybody like myself or anybody else has a fair shake?" he asked.

Lori Healey, Chicago 2016 president, referred Nolan to a memorandum of understanding that "provides for openness, partnership and job training and opportunities for everyone across the city to have access to the jobs."

Healey said no taxpayer money has been spent on the bid and the goal is to fund the Games with private dollars.
