This week’s names and numbers in baseball:

Chicago & the postseason nine

1. The Cardinals’ Yadier Molina had a two-strikeout/two-GIDP game against the Dodgers in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series; the Cubs’ Welington Castillo did that against the Giants on April 13.

2. Jacoby Ellsbury’s four-hit game for the Red Sox in the American League Championship Series had me thinking about Alexei Ramirez, who had four four-hit games for the White Sox this season, and Junior Lake, who had two for the Cubs.

3. Prince Fielder’s long RBI-less streak with the Tigers reminded me that Julio Borbon had streaks of 29 and 22 games without a ribbie for the Cubs, while Jordan Danks went 20 games without an RBI for the Sox.

4. The Dodgers went four games before they homered against the Cards. The Cubs had four streaks of four games without a homer in 2013, but the Sox topped them with a seven-game homerless streak this season against the Cubs, Athletics and Mariners.

5. In Game 5 of the NLCS, the Dodgers went deep four times. The Cubs had four four-homer games in 2013 and the Sox had three.

6. The Red Sox’ Jake Peavy allowed seven runs in just three innings against the Tigers in Game  4 of the ALCS; the Cubs’ Jeff Samardzija allowed nine to the Giants in 3.1 innings on Aug. 8. But that’s nothing compared to Charles Leesman, who gave up seven runs without retiring a batter while pitching for the Sox on Sept. 12.

7. In Game 4 of the NLCS, Shane Robinson hit a pinch-hit home run for the Cardinals. During the regular season, Dioner Navarro hit two pinch homers for the Cubs. Altogether, the Cubs had six pinch homers, while Conor Gillaspie hit the only pinch homer for the Sox.

8. Justin Verlander’s 10 strikeouts for the Tigers in Game 3 of the ALCS gave him six playoff games of 10-plus strikeouts in his career, a new record. FYI: Samardzija has five 10-strikeout games in his regular-season career.

9. Miguel Cabrera’s streak of reaching base ended Tuesday at 32 games, the longest streak in big-league postseason history. The longest Chicago streaks of reaching base in 2013 belonged to Donnie Murphy (Cubs) and Alex Rios (Sox), who had streaks of 18 games each.

NATIONAL nine to know

1. Conor Gillaspie, Drew Stubbs and Lorenzo Cain each had exactly 100 hits in 2013.

2. Alejandro De Aza, Ichiro Suzuki, Desmond Jennings, Norichi Aoki, Shin-Soo Choo and Denard Span each stole 20 bases.

3. The White Sox and the Pirates were each caught stealing 42 times. The Cubs, Rockies and Royals were each caught stealing 32 bases.

4. The Cubs’ Travis Wood and Jeff Samardzija were among the 11 pitchers who hit eight batters in 2013. The group included James Shields, Yu Darvish, Kris Medlin and Chris Archer.

5. Starlin Castro, David Ortiz, Kendrys Morales and Michael Young each grounded into 21 double plays.

6. Nate Jones, Jose Quintana, Addison Reed, Justin Verlander, Felix Hernandez, Mark Buehrle and R.A. Dickey were among the 21 pitchers who allowed six sacrifice flies.

7. Anthony Rizzo and Jarrod Saltalamacchia each hit 40 doubles.

8. Chris Sale, Quintana, Jerome Williams and Matt Cain each allowed 23 homers.

9. The Cubs and the White Sox each allowed 643 earned runs.
