As in other practices during training camp, quarterback Jay Cutler’s first pass in team drills was intercepted Sunday. It came in a red-zone situation and was made by cornerback Zack Bowman.
Coach Marc Trestman wasn’t pleased with how his offense opened practice, bemoaning its “slow start” and calling it “sluggish.” But Trestman thought the offense improved as the day went on.
Of course, that meant Cutler improved. Cutler wasn’t on target with all of his passes — “I think you saw a lot of really good awkward catches by our receiving corps,” Trestman said — but he was making the right reads and calling the right plays to begin with.
Trestman commended Cutler for his demeanor after his poor starts, which included his interception Friday against the Panthers.
“He didn’t let it affect him,” Trestman said. “And I think that’s a good sign. That’s something positive.”
Cutler’s best pass was to tight end Martellus Bennett in the corner of the end zone during a goal-line situation in team drills. He also had a pass tipped and intercepted by nickel back Isaiah Frey.
