Angela Rypien, who played an array of sports growing up, can play several positions in football.
But in her mind, there’s only one.
“Quarterback is my passion,” she said.
Not a surprise when your dad is Mark Rypien, a Super Bowl MVP and two-time Pro Bowl quarterback for the Washington Redskins.
After an uneven season for the Seattle Mist in the Lingerie Football League, Angela will play closer to home, joining the Baltimore Charm. Her father, Angela said, has promised to attend all her home games.
But Angela said he’s a better doer than a teacher.
“He can pretty much do anything,” she said. “But him teaching someone else? I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh.’ It’s so difficult for him.”
At first, Mark was skeptical about his daughter playing in a league in which the basic uniform consists of a helmet, shoulder pads … and a bikini.
“Once he saw me taking it seriously and getting as involved as I could, that’s when he started looking past all of that,” she said.
“He definitely has to hear what people have to say. He doesn’t enjoy that. But he’s a supportive parent, so I’m more than thankful for that.”
Still, she has endured her share of heckling.
“Just stuff like, ‘Your dad being a Super Bowl MVP doesn’t make you any better than anyone else,’ ” she said. “But it’s nothing too bad.
“I think they say worse things to some of the other girls.”
