The Wolves found few scoring opportunities Sunday when they faced the Rockford IceHogs at Allstate Arena.
But luckily for the home team, Michael Davies always seems to capitalize when he plays the Wolves’ division rival.
Davies scored two goals in a 3-2 victory, despite the Wolves mustering only 21 shots.
Davies has scored seven of his 31 career goals in 18 regular-season games against the IceHogs. It has taken him 123 games to amass the other 24 goals. He has 12 goals this season.
“Everyone has their team that they feast off of, and I just get lucky every time,” Davies said. “I love playing these guys.”
Playing their third game in as many days, the Wolves easily could have been undone early when the IceHogs’ Jeremy Morin scored a short-handed goal at 9:06 of the first period for a 1-0 lead.
But Davies responded with his first goal at 12:57 and his second 46 seconds later, giving the Wolves the emotional boost they needed to overcome any fatigue from the busy weekend.
The Wolves struggled in the second period, getting outshot 17-7. The Wolves were outshot 38-21 for the game.
The IceHogs’ Ryan Stanton tied the score at 2:59. After an IceHogs onslaught, the Wolves took the lead on Kevin Connauton’s wrister from the slot at 16:55.
At 6:10 of the third period, the IceHogs’ Brad Smith had a wide-open net, but Wolves goalie Joe Cannata came up with the save, which was confirmed after video review.
