CALGARY, Alberta — When center Brandon Pirri was reassigned to Rockford on Dec. 4, he found it difficult to put the move in perspective. After all, it was a demotion.
But there was a silver lining: Pirri knew exactly what he had to do to get back to the NHL.
A skilled offensive player who led the AHL in scoring last season, Pirri lacked consistency on defense. Having improved after nearly two months in Rockford, Pirri was recalled for the Blackhawks’ road trip, which began Tuesday night against the Flames.
“Being a full 200-foot player is a big priority for everyone’s game, and just that consistency is something I went down there to work on,” Pirri said. “If I’m doing what I can every game and staying consistent, that’s going to help keep me up here a little bit longer.”
Security in Sochi
The security concerns for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, have been well documented. But Hawks captain Jonathan Toews is comfortable with the measures being taken.
“I feel confident bringing my family over there, and I think that’s what I’m going to do and enjoy the Olympics,” he said.
Day of rest
Center Michal Handzus was a healthy scratch. Coach Joel Quenneville said he was just giving him a break.
