The Blackhawks didn’t look far for their first-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, picking West Dundee’s Ryan Hartman with the 30th and final selection of the round. Hartman, the 16th-rated North American skater, is a 5-11, 185-pounder who was born in Hilton Head, S.C., before moving to the Chicago area.
He had 23 goals and 37 assists in 56 games with the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League last season. With no picks in the second and third rounds thanks to the trade that landed Johnny Oduya last year, Hawks general manager Stan Bowman said before the draft that he was looking to add one or two picks. But the Hawks stood pat in the first round. There are six more rounds in the draft today, with the Hawks’ next scheduled pick at 121, at the end of the fourth round.
Hartman won gold with Team USA at the 2012 Under-18 World Championship and the 2013 World Junior Championship. A Chicago Mission minor hockey product, Hartman competed for the U.S. Under-18 National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich., in 2011-12, recording 41 points (16-25—41) in 59 games.
