Look for Kings to keep on rolling in Stanley Cup finals

Updated: July 3, 2012 12:59PM

STANLEY CUP FINALS

KINGS VS. DEVILS

Regular-season series: Devils won both times, outscoring the Kings 5-1.

Back check: The Kings were considered a Stanley Cup contender at the start of the season, so their eighth-seed ranking is deceiving. However, they are the just the second No. 8 seed to reach the finals since the conference-based format started in 1994. The Devils are the first sixth seed since the 2004 Calgary Flames did it under current Kings coach Darryl Sutter.

Fun fact: For the first time, both teams in the finals are captained by Americans — Zach Parise (Devils) and Dustin Brown (Kings).

Key stat: 8-0, the Kings’ record on the road in these playoffs.

The difference: Both teams focus on defensive play, are strong on the forecheck, have depth production and carry enough offensive stars to come through at key moments. The difference is the Kings are deeper, especially with Anze Kopitar, Mike Richards, Jarret Stoll and Colin Fraser down the middle. Drew Doughty is playing like a top-tier blue-liner, and goalie Jonathan Quick might be a lock for the Conn Smythe Trophy if not for the play of Brown.

Adam L. Jahns’ pick: Kings in six.
