Health helps as Eric Weems chases Bears’ KR job

BOURBONNAIS — Special-teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis isn’t close to naming the Bears’ kick returner yet. But with speedster Chris Williams sidelined with a hamstring injury, Eric Weems has a chance to improve his lead in the competition.

‘‘We know who he is as a cover player,’’ DeCamillis said. ‘‘What he didn’t have a chance to do here with Devin [Hester] being here was as a returner, which he did in Atlanta. So we’d like to get him more reps there, obviously.’’

Weems didn’t break out against the Philadelphia Eagles in Friday’s exhibition. He had two fair catches on punts and two kickoff returns for 44 total yards.

‘‘I thought Philly did a good job of covering him,’’ DeCamillis said. ‘‘We really didn’t have a good gap for him there. We’d like to get some open spaces for him and see what he can do.’’

Williams was set to return kicks and punts in the second half against the Eagles, but his injury prevented that. DeCamillis said Williams’ speed stood out on his 73-yard touchdown reception.

‘‘Yeah, I’m a little bummed out about [getting no returns],’’ said Williams, who hurt his hamstring before that big play. ‘‘But that [touchdown] catch doesn’t hurt.’’

In and out

Safety Chris Conte (shoulder) practiced for the second consecutive day, but his status for Thursday against the Jacksonville Jaguars will be a trainer’s decision, coach Marc Trestman said.

‘‘We’ll have enough time to evaluate [Conte] and know what he can do,’’ defensive coordinator Mel Tucker said.

◆ Right tackle Jordan Mills (left foot) remained in a walking boot. Offensive lineman Eben Britton (hamstring) and defensive back Isaiah Frey (hamstring) sat out again.

◆ Linebacker Lance Briggs was given a day off.
