The agent for Bears defensive tackle Henry Melton plans to fight the misdemeanor assault and public intoxication charges Melton is facing after an altercation at a bar in Grapevine, Texas.

“After investigating the matter, Henry Melton did not physically start any altercation that evening,” Melton’s agent, Jordan Woy, said in a statement Tuesday. “We have had several independent witnesses contact us separately to corroborate this.

“We plan to defend Henry in this matter, and we will determine if we will bring any causes of action on his behalf.”

According to Grapevine police, Melton was arrested at 1:45 a.m. Sunday at Chill Sports Bar after he was asked to leave. Melton allegedly punched the bar’s manager and bit his arm, police said. Four staff members restrained Melton until police arrived.

A booking photo showed Melton with a bloody nose and abrasions on the left side of his face. Melton declined medical attention for a cut on his nose, police said.

Melton’s assault charge is a Class A misdemeanor and a state offense. He posted a $1,000 bond for the assault charge and a $210 bond for public intoxication. The charges require separate court dates.

Melton, who went to Grapevine High School, is on injured reserve with a torn left anterior cruciate ligament. The Bears were in Philadelphia when he was arrested, but Melton isn’t obligated to be with the team.

Melton, who signed his $8.45 million franchise tag for 2013, is one of many Bears who will be a free agent after the season. A fourth-round pick in 2009, Melton has played in 48 games, starting 32, and recording 151/2 sacks.

As of Sunday, the Bears said in a statement that they were still “gathering information to learn more about the circumstances surrounding the arrest.”
