Bears quarterback Jay Cutler had his helmet back on and took part in practice at the Walter Payton Center on Thursday.
But coach Marc Trestman ruled him out for Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys. Backup Josh McCown will make his fifth start.
Cutler, who is recovering from a high-ankle sprain, participated in stretches with his teammates and also in individual drills immediately after.
Trestman said Cutler was limited and that he was happy to see him get some throws in, but he is yet to be cleared by team doctors.
“Jay is very clear about where he is medically,” Trestman said after practice. “He’s continued to progress.”
Trestman said he’s confident that Cutler will play again this season, reiterating that his status remains week-to-week.
“I was encouraged today by the work that [Cutler] got in,” Trestman said.
