1. If you’re coaching the Bears this week, whom do you start at quarterback, Jay Cutler or Josh McCown?
Jay Cutler is your starting quarterback. If he’s healthy, ready to play and doctors give him the OK, you have to do that. Marc Trestman has confidence in both his quarterbacks, so I don’t think there is any problem there. I think McCown played very well, but I thought Cutler was playing very well before he got hurt. My only concern is I hope he doesn’t reinjure it. But you have to play your starter.
2. You have been saying it almost all season: The Bears need to tackle better. Coach Marc Trestman acknowledged it this week. But how do you fix that at midseason?
The only people who can fix that are the people on the field. Coaching can’t fix that. You can’t practice that. Tackling is like anything else: It’s an attitude. If you want to do it bad enough, you’ll find a way to get the guy on the ground. That’s bascially what it comes down to. Can you go back and fix a guy’s form? No. It’s too late to do that.
3. We’re a week into the Dolphins’ saga between Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin. Your thoughts?
I don’t think anybody really knows what happened. I don’t know much about either guy, but I think Incognito is kind of a tough guy. I don’t know how that image came across. It was really interesting to hear his teammates defend him. Martin, I don’t know anything about him, but I think he is a little oversensitive. But in saying all that, there’s no place in sports for that. There’s no place in sports for sending a text with what Incognito sent to Martin. That should never exist. So I think what’s happened now, it’s turned into more of a racial thing than anything else. And that’s a shame. I don’t know that is where it started out.
4. Did the Superfans put the hex on Aaron Rodgers in the State Farm ‘‘Discount Daaa-ble Check’’ commercial?
(Laughing) I saw those guys pushing little needles into his shoulder. The shame of the game was him getting hurt. They’re a great team with him. But the Bears can’t worry about that. It’s all part of football. But I think they jinxed him.
You were the only ESPN expert who picked the Bears over the Packers last week. Whom do you like this week?
I’m a Bears fan. I think they’ll beat the Lions. But here’s the thing: Somebody has got to touch Calvin Johnson. They have to stop him a little bit, bump into him, push him off the line. You can’t let him get a free release. I watched what he did to Dallas [329 receiving yards], and it was embarrassing.
