GREEN BAY, Wis. — Despite a diagnosis that said otherwise, Brandon Marshall insisted that Jay Cutler would return Monday from a torn left groin.

The wide receiver might have been off by only six days.

ESPN reported Monday night that the Bears quarterback plans to return Sunday against the Lions. Marc Trestman said the team will wait until Wednesday to assess his progress.

“We’re going to go with whatever the doctors say,” the Bears coach said. “When they approve Jay to play, then Jay will be back in there.

“We’re going to enjoy this one for at least 10 hours before we have to go back and move on to the next one. We’ll give our players the day off, and we’ll see where things are come Wednesday when we’re back with our players.”

Cutler’s diagnosis Oct. 21 called for at least four weeks off.

Much needed

Shea McClellin said he “had no idea” Aaron Rodgers injured his shoulder after his first-quarter sack. He finished with three sacks.

The team’s defensive ends had five. They entered the game with four.

“I think we needed a game like this as a unit,” McClellin said. “We did a good job.”

This and that

• Rookie linebacker Khaseem Greene started but didn’t play his first defensive snap until the second Packers drive because the Bears were in a Nickel formation.

• Defensive tackle Jay Ratliff, who agreed to terms with the Bears, told WMVP-AM on Monday he is “just a couple weeks out” from returning from a groin injury.
