1. How do you think Marc Trestman’s game plan will change with Josh McCown at quarterback?
It won’t. The offense is not the problem right now; the defense has to play much better and start executing. And they have injuries, too. The tackling right now is not good. You can’t keep putting the offense behind the eight-ball and say you have to score 40 points every game. You can’t do that. The offense will need to run the ball and take some time off the clock and keep the game in the 30s. It has to be a little more conservative. The offense can’t turn it over right now, or they’re going to have problems.
2. As a coach, what’s the best way to take advantage of the bye week?
If you have injuries, the bye week is great. But I don’t think you can just shut football down for a week, then pick it up next week and feel you’re going to be in the same spot when you left. There have to be some workouts in there. We usually gave the players the weekend off, but today they’re playing without practicing. They don’t do anything in practice except walk around. We played, we hit, we made contact. You have to pressure the muscles in your legs. You just can’t go out there on Sunday with the speed of this game and expect you’re not going to get hurt.
3. How did you celebrate your 74th birthday last week?
It was a good one. I got the best birthday card in the world from my mom. I went back to see her. She’s 93. That was the biggest thrill for me.
4. The Cubs are searching for a manager. Any interest?
I have no interest in that. The Cubs have to get their heads screwed on right. It’s a shame. This is the greatest sports town in the country. You have to give the fans a viable product to have a chance to win. The North Side hasn’t done that.
Whom should they bring in?
I don’t know the answer. You know what makes a good manager? Good players. You need to make good front-office decisions to bring the right players in, develop them and stay with them. Don’t get caught up in the [free-agent] market, chasing this guy or chasing that guy. You might add one or two if you need a pitcher. But other than that, you need to develop players.
