BOSTON — Brandon Marshall opened with a joke.

He was told, before speaking at the Kennedy Forum gala on Wednesday night, that he was limited to eight minutes.

“Our vice president gets up here, and he’s up for an hour,” Marshall joked. “The best teams are really good with clock management.

“Usually at these functions, they have a clock for you. . . .

“You might as well shut that off.”

While Bears fans might insert their own clock-management joke, Marshall turned serious.

There was someone in the ballroom, he said, who attended group therapy with him at nearby McLean Hospital, where he was treated for borderline personality disorder.

The seven-person group would share stories of self-evaluation — doctors, lawyers and even a social worker among them.

Marshall choked up.

“We got in our cars and went into society,” he said, “like everything was OK.”

It wasn’t, of course.

He told those in attendance that he wants to change that through his Brandon Marshall Foundation.

When he was done, Marshall received a standing ovation.
