The Bears’ injury-riddled defense took another big hit Friday.

Starting middle linebacker D.J. Williams will miss the remainder of the 2013 season after suffering a ruptured left pectoral tendon in Thursday night’s 27-21 victory over the New York Giants. Rookie Jon Bostic, a second-round draft pick from Florida who started at middle linebacker in the preseason, will replace Williams. The Bears play the Washington Redskins on Oct. 20 in Washington, D.C.

Bears coach Marc Trestman seemed to fear the worst when he addressed the Williams injury at his press conference Friday at Halas Hall ‘‘I think [Bostic’s] mentally ready to take on playing that position,’’ Trestman said. ‘‘The experience that he had will certainly help him down the road.’’

Bostic originally replaced Williams after Williams suffered a calf injury in the first week of training camp. Bostic returned an interception 51 yards for a touchdown in the Bears’ preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers. He also made an impression with a tremendous hit on San Diego Chargers receiver Mike Willie in the second preseaseon game the following week.

Though Bostic made his share of rookie mistakes, he looked like he would be the starting middle linebacker in the regular-season opener against the Bengals. But Williams, who signed with the Bears as a free agent after playing nine seasons with the Denver Broncos, returned to practice on Aug. 27 and started the regular-season opener.

Williams made an impact from the start. He had 12 tackles against the Saints last week. He had two tackles against the Giants on Thursday night. He apparently suffered the injury in the first half, but returned later in the game before leaving for good in the third quarter.

Williams will be the third defensive starter to be placed on injured reserve. Pro Bowl defensive tackle Henry Melton suffered a season-ending torn ACL against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3. His replacement, Nate Collins, suffered a torn ACL against the Saints last week.

Starting strong side linebacker James Anderson (back) also did not finish the Giants game, but he is expected to play against Washington.
