What does it say for the Bears that they acquired the most prolific quarterback in their history and hired the mastermind of one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history to infuse some life into their offense, yet had to rein in both of them to beat a winless team with one of the worst defenses in the NFL-

Whatever works, of course. The Bears beat the Bills 22-19 on Sunday in Toronto because Jay Cutler and Mike Martz didn't try to do too much.

Cutler, after missing on several long passes in losses to the Seahawks and Redskins at home, took what the Bills gave him and avoided critical mistakes. He was 17-of-30 for 188 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions - a 97.6 passer rating. His average of 6.3 yards per attempt was the lowest of the season in a complete game.

And who knows how badly Lovie Smith had to twist Martz's arm to call 24 running plays for Matt Forte (14-49) and Chester Taylor (10-13). While they didn't get a whole lot done on the ground, those rushes give Cutler fewer chances to overdo it.

It's doubtful the Bears brought in Cutler or Martz to play it safe, but that seems to be the Bears best chance of winning this season. In the Bears' own way, it makes perfect sense at Halas Hall.

And now, 10 MORE OBSERVATIONS from the Bears-Bills game in Toronto.
