In describing his quarterback is his new offense Thursday, Bears coach Marc Trestman used words not always associated with Jay Cutler.

“He’s been very efficient,” the coach said, “and has been very even-keeled throughout training camp and OTAs.”

Trestman said the fiery Cutler “does feel comfortable” with the scheme, as he prepares for its regular-season unveiling Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Cutler, however, hedged his statement.

“Only as comfortable as I could be up to this point,” he said. “We’re still learning things and still getting better each and every day.

“I don’t think we’ll be where we want to be for this game, but eventually we’ll get there each and every week.

“We’ve just got to be good enough to beat the Bengals this week — and hopefully we are.”

Cutler said Trestman has done a good job making the entire offense comfortable with the offense.

“I’m just kind of a piece of the puzzle,” Cutler said. “It takes those 10 other guys to do their jobs for me to do mine.

“That being said, at the quarterback position we do have a lot of pressure, there is a lot of responsibility. I own up to that each and every day.

“But in the new offense and where we’re at right now, I think this is probably the most comfortable I’ve felt in a new offense, and not having as many reps as somebody in Year 2 or 3 in a new offense.”
