Coach Marc Trestman will send out quarterback Jay Cutler to face the Carolina Panthers in the preseason opener Friday.
But how long Cutler will play against an opponent who can now hit him will depend on his initial success and Trestman’s discretion. Third-string quarterback Matt Blanchard will get the bulk of the action.
Trestman said that Cutler’s time will be ‘‘very, very limited.
‘‘How limited? I don’t know. It could be three plays, it could be one play, it could be eight plays. ... We’ll see how the flow of the game goes. If we go three-and-out, we’ll decide if he goes back in for another three. He may not.
“It’s really just a general feel on what we want to get accomplished at that time. The starters, including Jay, if they’re going to play, they’ll play minimally in this first game.”
Cutler began Wednesday’s practice with Tuesday’s problem as his first pass was deflected at the line and intercepted. After that, it was a pretty uneventful day. Cutler did make a couple of long completions to receiver Alshon Jeffery.
