Former Bears kick returner / DB Ron Smith dies at 70

Former Bears kick returner and defensive back Ron Smith died Sunday in Denver after a bout with lung cancer. He was 70.

Smith, a Chicago native, spent 10 seasons in the NFL, including four with the Bears (1965, 1970-72). He was a Pro Bowl kick returner in 1972, when he returned 30 kickoffs for 924 yards and a touchdown. He averaged 25.2 yards on 275 career kickoff returns and scored six touchdowns.

As a defensive back, Smith had 13 career interceptions, including three in 1971 for the Bears.

Smith, who played at Wisconsin, also spent time with the Atlan-
ta Falcons, Los Angeles Rams, San Diego Chargers and Oakland
Raiders.
