Four downs with Ditka
BY MIKE DITKA For Sun-Times Media
1. What are the Bears’ biggest needs entering the draft and free agency?
‘‘I think they’d like to get one more receiver and maybe a tight end. But I think they have to get somebody on that offensive line to help shore it up at tackle or guard. I think that’s probably one of their main concerns. If you look at it objectively, one more receiver, a tight end and an offensive lineman.’’
2. Tom Thibodeau has done a terrific job keeping the Bulls in the playoff hunt during Derrick Rose’s absence. What is the toughest job for a coach when you lose your best player to injury?
‘‘Everybody else has to pick up their game. That’s all they can do, really, when you lose a player like that. You know, you build your basketball team or your football team around certain players, whether it be a Walter Payton or whoever. And when you lose a guy of that caliber, it gets pretty tough. You gotta have other guys pick up their game. And that’s basically what’s gotta happen. I think Tom has done a great job, but, you know, players play and coaches coach.’’
3. What impressed you the most about the Blackhawks during their record-setting start to the season?
‘‘It’s been amazing. I watched the other night and thought Colorado outplayed them. The amazing thing about it is how good they are coached. I think they are coached outstandingly. They play position hockey, always backing up people, doing the things they do and doing it very, very well. I think what could start to bother them are the injuries right now.’’
4. Does former Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o have the talent to be a first-round pick in the NFL draft?
‘‘He does. I think he’s a good football player and a good person. Unfortunately, what happened, happened. He deserves to be picked there. Somebody’s going to pick him. He can play football. His instincts are good, and his speed is good enough. There’s nothing the matter with the way he plays football.’’
