The Bears locked up Jay Cutler for seven years. Good move or bad?
The front office and the coaching staff made a decision to go forward with Jay. He’s a great talent. I think it’s a good move. The worst thing you can do is bring in a new quarterback every two or three years. You see some of these teams doing that, and they don’t end up with any continuity.
[Seven years] is a long time, but if it doesn’t bother the Bears and doesn’t bother Jay, that’s all that matters. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.
I think it should take a lot of pressure off him and the team. I think he understands that this is an opportunity for him to do for this town what Sid Luckman did. There haven’t been a whole lot of great [quarterbacks] in this city, but [Luckman] certainly was. He owned this city. This is a great place and a great place to play and a great opportunity for him. I just hope it all works out.
Did you find it odd that with all their needs on defense, the Bears quickly signed their kicker and quarterback?
They know what they want to do. There’s no clear-cut way to do it and say, ‘‘We’re going to sign this guy, then that guy.’’ Nobody knows any better than Marc Trestman that you have to have a defense that complements your offense. They didn’t have that this year. How do you get that? Well, you can say personnel, you can say philosophy, you can say execution, you can say a lot of things. But until you get that, you’re going to struggle. You’re going to keep getting into the mode where you have to outscore your opponents because you can’t stop them, and that’s not good.
On the defensive side of the ball, where do the Bears need the most help?
You always like to have that one super pass rusher or that one lockdown corner, but I would say they need help in the secondary more than anywhere. They don’t get great play out of their safeties, and that becomes a problem.
Would the Bears be smart to move Shea McClellin to linebacker?
He’s a heckuva football player. I like him. You know, maybe if you stand him up, he’ll be able to rush the passer better.
I’ll tell you what, though: He plays hard and has a great motor. That’s all you can ask for from a guy. He gives you what he’s got.
Yeah, I don’t think that’s a bad move at all. I think his strengths are rushing the passer and his speed. That’s what makes him what he is.
